White sandy beaches, crystal clear waterArriving at Mbuna Bay you will find yourself surrounded by bush land – just as authentic as it has been for ages. Don’t expect neatly arranged flower beds or trees and bushes trimmed into perfect shapes. Here, only the seasons change the appearance of the landscape. When it rains, everything comes to life: the bush turns green, all kinds of flowers blossom and the grass grows two meters high. Soon after the rain stops, nature turns into the opposite with all the land drying out for months.Mbuna Bay is a true Eco Lodge observing high standards for sustainable tourism in Mozambique and has been recognized for its environmental practice and social responsibility. The lodge is fully solar powered including solar-based water heaters which provide warm water to all chalets. In developing our dream we have created a business dedicated to the conservation of the natural environment that is transparently ecologically responsible. Before launching the project, a comprehensive environmental impact assessment was conducted and approved by the Ministry of Environment. We take pride in our organic farm in which we produce the vast majority of the the ingredients used for the preparation of our vegetarian meals. Some of the produce you will taste at the lodge you would never or rarely find in a supermarket. Apart from our nursery and our gardens full of vegetables, lettuce and herbs, we also grow an assortment of fruit and nut trees and pineapple plants, which grow near the already-existing abundance of papaya, banana and mango trees.Exquisite meals from our organic gardenSatisfying your palate is an important part of your stay with us and we delight in exposing you to new taste sensations. Similar to our commitment to the environment, we strive to live a healthy life ourselves. We also deeply care for animals and their well-being. It is because of this that we are excited to be serving our customers fresh, delicious vegetarian meals, Our menus are designed daily to celebrate the seasonal produce grown in our organic gardens. Our chefs can be found in the gardens mornings and afternoons gathering the harvest for another exquisite creation. We even have a wood brick oven from which we make our home-made pizzas, which guests can themselves load up with ingredients from the garden. It is no surprise that our meals are what our guests comment on in nearly every review:Sustainable community developmentFrom the very beginning, the development of the local community has been one of the major aims behind Mbuna Bay. Apart from creating employment opportunities, the lodge continuously offers various income-generating possibilities and has been implementing several projects in the areas of health, education, agriculture and community empowerment.Cob HousesThe two spacious earthen houses “Casa Branca” and “Imbondeiro” each have their own private area away from the other chalets and bungalows. They both have large windows and a front veranda with an open view to the sandy beach. The sleeping area and en suite bathrooms are tucked into the bush and “Imbondeiro” even has an outside shower and a stone bath tub directly at the foot of a huge baobab tree, providing guests with complete privacy but full access to nature. Both houses are equipped with a luxurious King size bed, Scandinavian duvets and pillows, crisp white linen, large walk-in mosquito nets and locally handcrafted furnitureBeach BungalowsFour spacious and luxurious wooden chalets are located directly at the beach. They have been erected on stilts to cause minimal impact to the fragile nature of the dunes. Through their picture windows all of the beach chalets offer an unhindered view of the lake and the bush countryside. From your en suite bathroom, and even standing under the shower, you can look out onto the water and enjoy the manifold sounds and sights of nature around you. Like in all of Mbuna Bay’s guest houses, all furniture and decorations have been carefully crafted by local villagers; pillows and curtains have been sown by our own local tailor.Enjoy moments of leisure in the hammock on your veranda and admire the spectacular daily sunset over the mountains of Malawi on the opposite side of the lakeBush HousesFour traditional brick bungalows provide an ideal setting for bush lovers and those on a smaller budget. They are arranged around a cozy courtyard, situated about 80m from the lake, surrounded by bush and large Baobab trees. The bush bungalows offer the same comfort as the other guest houses, including an en suite bathroom and the exclusivity of an external private shower hidden in the bush under the open sky. Each bungalow has its own stony terrace from where you will experience that “the bush is alive”.
