The Nature Trail: An Alpine Trek to Discover Flora and Fauna
Alta Via No. 2, also known as the natural high route, is an exceptionally interesting hiking itinerary. Much of its path winds through the territories of Gran Paradiso National Park and Mont Avic Regional Park. This route traverses the wild areas of the Aosta Valley, home to numerous alpine flora and fauna, including some of the rarest species. It also passes through inhabited areas where visitors can explore the ancient origins of Valdostan traditions and craftsmanship and savor local products.
Following the right bank of the Dora Baltea, Alta Via No. 2 runs along well-marked and signposted trails. Well-trained hikers can complete the entire route, while those new to hiking can enjoy shorter sections at lower elevations. The itinerary is accessible during the summer months and spans medium and high mountain areas, including meadows, pastures, woods, and rocky terrains, maintaining an average altitude of 2,000 meters and occasionally reaching up to 3,000 meters (near Col Loson, it almost reaches 3,300 meters).
In these untouched natural areas, you can admire the grace of a running chamois or the elegant flight of a golden eagle. You might also encounter a herd of male ibex grazing in the valleys at the foot of the moraines and perennial snow in the late hours of the day. The ideal time to admire the flora is in July, when mountain flowers are in full bloom.
Each hotel we recommend will be ready to welcome you with the unique and warm hospitality typical of the Alps.
